Iran condemns forfeiture of Alavi Foundation properties by a US court

TEHRAN, April 19 (MNA) – Iran’s FM spokeswoman has condemned a US court verdict on forfeiture of Alavi Foundation properties as ‘illegal,’ and ‘violation of the US law.’

Marzieh Afkham who was speaking with reporters on Friday, told that the verdict was a violation of the US laws and condemned it as ‘baseless and far from realities.’

A court in New York had given verdict to forfeit Alavi Foundation property,36-story Midtown Manhattan office building located at 650 Fifth Avenue, New York, for the role the foundation played on ‘money laundering for Iran’s government,’ as the court verdict read.

“Iran has no role and benefit in the Foundation, and claims made by the court about Iran’s role in terrorism are a trite and repeated claim. Iran is itself a victim of terrorism,” told Afkham. “The verdict is to violate the basics of the US law.”

Afkham quoted a US court verdict on Iran’s role on September 11 terrorist attacks on the US and links with Al-Qaeda and believed that the present verdict on Alavi Foundation was ‘as ludicrous as the verdict on the September 11 terrorist attack.’

Afkham believed that the court verdict undermined the place of the US judiciary system. “The verdict is not new, and we have seen many similar verdicts in the past which have been politically motivated,” said she, pointing to Iran’s Parliament Act, countervailing an Act by the Congress, allowing Iranian citizens to sue US criminal acts against Iran in Iranian courts.

She asserted that unlike US ‘documented crimes,’ the claims made in these courts ‘are based on undocumented evidence and unfounded testimonies.’

She told that in the past a US court of appeal had rejected the initial court verdict on Alavi Foundation, which she believed, was decided under political pressure and seeking political ends.

Iran believed Alavi Foundation is an independent charity foundation promoting Persian language and Iranian culture.

In response to a question on landing a Ghanaian plane landing in Tehran and rumors that the plane was from US, Afkham told that the plane carried a high-ranking delegation from Ghana, headed by president’s brother.

“Our investigation showed that the plane is US-owned and that Ghana has been operating it for 2 years,” added Afkham.
